10 must see movies from 2016

Welcome to the first annual power rankings of the top ten films of 2016. Things to keep in mind when reading this list:

  1. It is subjective (duh) and will not include films that none of us have seen, and yes there were several films none of us were able to see.
  2. The Top 3 films from each individual list are guaranteed to be in the final rankings.
  3. These rankings were composited from multiple different top ten lists created by Aaron Gray, Marc Wells, Spencer Brook, and Nick Evans.
  4. Process of creating this list explained at the end... for you math nerds.
  5. The things to keep in mind also form a list.

Each of us chose different films in our lists, but we could only choose ten for our combined top ten. We have created an honorable mentions category, comprised of films that appeared either low on all of our lists, or on just one list. Honorable Mentions are in Alphabetical Order.

Other Films receiving votes:

  • 10 Cloverfield Lane
  • Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Doctor Strange
  • Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
  • La La Land
  • Magnificent 7
  • Star Trek Beyond
  • X-Men: Apocalypse
And without further ado, the Moment you've been scrolling for!

Movie Reviews or Whatever's Top 10 Films of 2016

10. Kubo and the Two Strings
Why it's here:

Kubo and the Two Strings is a gorgeous stop motion animated film with plenty of heart. Starring Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey, and Art Parkinson Laika's latest animated feature film might be their best! Don't miss it!

9. Sully
Why it's here:

Sully is a thoughtful drama featuring excellent performance of Tom Hanks as Captain Sullenberger as he experiences the acclaim of heroism and the pain of subsequent criticism.

8. Moana
Why it's here:

Moana is a gorgeous animated musical exploring an overlooked culture. Music by Lin Manuel Miranda and voices from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and newcomer Auli'i Cravalho put Moana a cut above most of the year's best animated films.

7. The Jungle Book
Why it's here:

Arguably the best Disney Live Action remake of any so far released, The Jungle Book is perhaps the most technically advanced film ever made (so far). Thrilling adventure for braver families.

6. The Little Prince

Why it's here:

Netflix shows that it can release quality films with The Little Prince. Featuring Clay-mation, Stop motion animation, traditional animation, CGI animation, and cut out animation, The Little Prince gives a lesson in the art-form while providing a meaningful story that adults should not forget, even when they grow up.

5. Your Name
Why it's here:

Your Name excels as a science fiction film as well as a romance. Anyone wanting to find a heartfelt animated film or a standout foreign film, look no further than this masterpiece. Directed by Makoto Shinkai, Your Name proves that animation can be charming, funny, entertaining, and thoughtful without being childish.

4. Finding Dory
Why it's here:

Finding Dory is a heartwarming story about finding family, even if your family isn't blood. Beautiful animation, combined with beautiful voice performances from well known actors, such as Ellen Degeneres and Idris Elba, made this film a treat to watch.

3. Zootopia
Why it's here:

Zootopia our choice for best animated film of the year despite some stiff competition. The technical quality of a Disney film has come to be expected, but the depth and the social commentary so masterfully discussed without preaching makes Zootopia separate itself from a good animated film, into masterful cinema.

2. Captain America: Civil War
Why it's here:

Captain America: Civil War brought a new realm to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by pitting our favorite heroes against one another in surprisingly realistic, moral situations. No matter which side you support, performances from mainstays like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, and Scarlett Johansson return to fan favorite roles, and are supported by one of the best breakout performances of this year. Tom Holland, the new Spider-Man, makes a promising step into an already fantastic universe.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Why it's here:

What else could take the crown for the film of the year but Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Let's face it, Star Wars is the King of all franchises (That's right, I said it) and Rogue One is able to expand on the story of the original trilogy without feeling like a set up (until the very end). Gorgeous visuals and exciting action make Rogue One the movie to see from 2016.

How the list is made

Alright nerds. If you really want to know how I did it, here we go. Upon receiving the lists, I rewarded each film a number of points based on where it fell on each of the lists. A film ranked number 1 on a list would receive 10 points while a film ranked 10 on that same list would receive only 1 point. I divided that total by the number of lists on which the film appeared. To reward top films even more I gave extra points to those films that appeared in the top 3 of each of the list. For each #1 vote that a certain film obtained, I would give an additional 3 points to the average. For each # 2, I would give 2 points, etc. In the end, Rogue One received 13.3 points placing it in first while Kubo only received 5 points.

We'll see you all in 2017!
